Harassment IS a Big Deal!

Recently, a friend of mine who is in the group Moms of Edmond (MOES) shared with me what one of their members posted regarding harassment in the workplace. As an individual and company that conducts workplace investigations, particularly fraud, embezzlement and sexual harassment, I find it very disheartening (putting it nicely) to still see harassment that is sexual in nature, continuously taking place in the work arena.

I understand, sexual harassment also happens to men, so I do not want to discount this area of violation either. I think this is what angers me... the perpetrator believes they are causing one "no big deal" act, or "it was meant as a joke." To the victim, it can cause emotional harm that may take therapy, sometimes years of therapy depending on the severity of the situation. But certainly, it was a big deal and certainly, was no joke. Violation of an individual of any kind is no laughing matter.

If we all take responsibility in our homes, in our workplaces, in our society, to defend the dignity and respect that all individuals deserve, and if we stand up to defeat harassment (and bullying) no matter the personal cost (rather than thinking "it's wrong, but I don't want to get involved.") Then maybe, just maybe, we have a shot at ridding our homes, schools and workplaces of this travesty. Maybe that's grandiose, but we effect change one person at a time. Will you be that person?

Please read and share!
